Linen is a remarkable natural fabric made from flax seeds—light with a wonderful sheen, breathable, and timeless. There is a reason why the fabric is most loved by Europeans, think Brunello Cucinelli and Wimbledon spectators.
With just a bit of care, your linen pieces will stay beautiful and last for years. Here’s how to take care of them.
Removing Stains from Linen
Act quickly. Gently blot the stain with cold water—never rub, as it can set the stain. If the stain’s had time to settle, apply a small amount of mild dish soap and a touch of baking soda or white vinegar, then blot again with a clean cloth. Always test on a hidden area first.
Caring for Linen Dresses
Wash it by hand with a very gentle soap for best results.
Avoid hangers: Fold or roll your shirts to prevent stretching.
Keep out of sunlight: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light to avoid fading.
Iron while damp if you prefer a crisp look, or embrace the relaxed wrinkles linen is known for.
Use starch spray to iron away heavy wrinkles.
Caring for Linen Shirts and Pants
Folding is ideal, but hanging is safe for pants if done with a sturdy, padded hanger.
As with shirts, store them away from moisture and sunlight.
A light steam or iron can help smooth creases, but a lived-in look is just as elegant.
